How to Keep Your Sanity While Working From Home

Working from home is not always easy, as you will have to deal with family obligations, a lack of communication with the outside world and a mountain of work that never seems to end. Those who work from home are rarely able to take weekends off, cannot call in sick and often find trouble keeping a balance in their lives. Luckily, there are a few things that you can do to ensure that you stay sane and continue to grow your home-based business.


Schedule Outings

Since you will have very little contact with the outside world, it is important that you schedule fun things to do with family and friends. Even if you only go out for coffee once a week, it can help you to leave the stress of your business behind and relax. Often times, those who work from home spend all of their time working and never take the time to step away for a few minutes, so scheduling this time becomes very important to your level of sanity. For those with kids, this could be the only adult conversation that you get every week, making it very important.


Set Boundaries

When working at home with a family, you must set boundaries. This could mean having a designated home office that family members cannot enter or simply a few hours each day where the family must leave you alone. Make sure that you stick to these boundaries once they are set, as ignoring them even once could lead to the family not respecting your space or time. Remind your family members that your home office is similar to a regular office and that you are not to be disturbed while you are working.


Get Some Exercise

Those who work outside of the home get exercise by walking to and from their vehicles, up sets of stairs or around the office. In a work-at-home situation, you are not getting this exercise and it can affect your mood. Go for a walk around the block, join a gym or purchase some gym equipment for your home to ensure that you get physical stimulation. Having some equipment at home allows you to check emails or go over documents while you exercise, so that you do not get too far behind on your deadlines. The less active you are, the more the stress will build up over time.


Do Not Overwork

Since working more usually leads to more money, it is very tempting to work around the clock to increase your savings. Unfortunately, this is a great way to burn yourself out, leading you to resent your business. Try to keep track of your weekly hours and stop once you hit a certain point. While you will probably work more than 40 hours each week, since you have so much to handle, try to keep the number reasonable. Keeping set hours also allows you to look forward to the weekend, which you can enjoy away from the home with your family.
